A Message from our President:
Hello. My name is Ron Axelrod and I am the newly elected President of the Board of Trustees of the Beth Israel Cemetery Association. I have served on the Board for over 20 years and am a 2nd generation Board member. My father, Jerry Axelrod, served on the Board for many decades. He brought me onto the Board in 1988. When Jerry Salny retired in 1996, I assumed chairmanship of the Review Committee, reviewing the inscriptions on all stones, monuments and markers.
My strong attachment to Beth Israel Cemetery comes from family ties. My grandparents, on both sides, as well as my mother, are buried here. Keeping the grounds trimmed and mowed; the property clean of trash and dead bushes; and the monuments correctly inscribed are my top priorities.
I welcome any comments and/or suggestions, whether good or bad, to present to the Board. I can be reached by either email rja4606@yahoo.com or cell phone 973-538-4606.

Monument Rules
Over the past 80 years, the rules and regulations regarding monuments have undergone many revisions. The rules are in place to make sure that Jewish law is followed. For example, no images are allowed on markers aside from approved symbols such as a Star of David or a Menorah. Stones are required to be of a superior grade of granite and cannot be black granite as it is difficult to read the inscription.
Since 2008, stand-up markers have been permitted in the New Section of the cemetery. Flush, to the ground markers are still allowed and are placed along the edge of the pathway. The stand-up markers are required to be a standard size and height.
The process of selecting a stone is done by first visiting the cemetery to determine the kind of marker that the family may want to purchase; granite, bronze on granite, or marble. It is up to the family to go to a monument maker. The cost of the stone will also include a fee for pouring a cement foundation for the stone. This is paid to the monument maker but the check is made out to the cemetery. Our construction crew is responsible for the foundations and guarantees their work for 10 years.

Veterans
If you or a family member are a veteran of the US Military, you are entitled to several benefits. Let your funeral director know prior to burial. The funeral director can contact the VA and have uniformed personnel present for the funeral. They can play “Taps” during the funeral and can provide a flag for the casket. The flag can also be presented to the family prior to burial.
At Beth Israel Cemetery, we try to honor our veterans with flags. If you have a family member that needs such a flag, please let Alise Ford know. A volunteer from the Jewish War Veterans helps us maintain our flags. If you would like to help with this on-going tradition, please let us know.
Each year three local congregations send in membership dues ($1 per family) so that members of those congregations can receive discounted “member” rates. That means that for members, a plot currently costs $300. Every plot must also carry “permanent maintenance” of $400. This is the money used to upgrade the cemetery and to ensure that its care will continue into the future.
The cemetery not only serves individual members, it also serves its congregations. When holy books or religious artifacts have outlived their time, the cemetery will bury these items for the synagogue. Each year on the Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the Cemetery Association holds a community Memorial Service. Names of those individuals that have passed away during the year are read aloud. The service is conducted by the clergy of all three member congregations.

Our Trustees
Our current Board of Directors is made up of ten members of the Morristown Jewish Center – Beit Yisrael and Temple B’nai Or. Our Board meets bi-annually to elect officers, review maintenance needs, coordinate our Community Memorial Service and to perform other duties as required.
Officers this year are Ron Axelrod, President; Bill Roth, Vice-President (and Board member since 1946); Fran Loewensteiner, Treasurer; and Bill Schlosser, Secretary. Other Board Members are Joel Beecher, Alan Brown, Nancy Goldband, Norman Goldberg, Mel Levine, Esq. and Peter Loeb.
Should you have any questions or concerns about the Association, please feel free to contact our trustees at info@bethisraelcemetery.com.
Benefits of Membership
It pays to keep your temple membership. Members in good standing at the Morristown Jewish Center-Beit Yisrael, Temple B’nai Or and Congregation B’nai Israel are entitled to discounted prices for plots and permanent maintenance (perpetual care). Those who have been members of these congregations for at least two years are able to purchase two plots for $300 each. The Permanent Maintenance fee for members is $400. Those who are not members of our congregations pay the standard fee of $2500 per plot and $2500 for Permanent Maintenance. (These are current prices as of 7/31/10).
Invoices
Twice a year, in February and in August, invoices are sent to plot-holders with outstanding balances in their accounts. The Board has made it mandatory that a minimum of $100 per plot needs to be paid per year. Those who have not made payments in several years may forfeit their ownership of plots.
Why is There No Grass?
Do you remember your Geology 101 class where the teacher explained stratigraphy? The top soil is full of rich organic materials. Under that is a layer of loose loam, a combination soil of peat, sand and clay. And below that is the hardpan clay. Well, here’s where that lesson comes into play. When a grave is dug, the soil is carefully placed next to the plot. Scoop after scoop, the layers become jumbled and the rich organic topsoil gets mixed into the loam and hard clay from the bottom of the pit.
The same soil is used to refill a grave. Most of the hard clay is the first to be used but often the rich topsoil is lost into the middle of the grave. Rarely does it go back to the surface. After a few weeks, the mound on top of a newly dug grave will settle and sink. To help nature along, we regularly put new topsoil on the mound and re-seed the area. And of course, the first grass to take hold is crab grass and weeds. It almost always takes a year or two before “good” grass begins to grow on a grave.
Our crew will add topsoil and re-seed the area and given good weather conditions, grass will grow.
Volunteers Needed
Flags: A special thanks goes to the Phelps family of Temple B’nai Or. With the help of Marcus & Elijah, both 9 years old, we were able to ensure that our veterans had flags for Memorial Day this past May. Our friend, Joe Notowicz from the Jewish War Veterans is our long-standing volunteer in this department. Along with Board Member Alan Brown, they have maintained the flags for many years. Board Member Bill Schlosser and Scott Schlosser were also very helpful that weekend in May helping to spruce up the cemetery, clean garden beds and replace flags.
We are always looking for more volunteers to help for Veterans Day in November.
Stones: You may have noticed that our bird baths are filled with small stones. Thanks to our helpers at Shalom Yeladim at the Morristown Jewish Center-Beit Yisrael and the Religious School at Temple B’nai Or, many of these stones are painted. They are available for our guests to use to mark a visit to the cemetery (please don’t use all of them!). If you are at either synagogue and are planning a trip to the cemetery, please ask if there are any stones that are ready to be brought to the bird baths. Thank you.

Rate Change
Beginning January 1st, 2013 the preferred rates that members of our local synagogues are offered will change. Beginning in the new year, all plots to members will cost $1200 each regardless of how many plots are purchased. This price includes permanent maintenance. The price does not include the cost of opening a grave nor the cost of the stone and foundation.
This change has been announced in all three of our member congregations: Congregation B’nai Israel in Basking Ridge, Morristown Jewish Center-Beit Yisrael, and Temple B’nai Or of Morristown.
The change does not affect those who are not members or those who have an open balance on their accounts.
Our Trustees
Our current Board of Directors meets twice a year to ensure that the cemetery property is properly cared for and maintained. Officers are Ronald Axelrod, President; Bill Roth, Vice-President; Fran Loewensteiner, Treasurer; Bill Schlosser, Secretary. Other Board members are Joel Beecher, Alan Brown, Nancy Goldband, and Peter Loeb.
Norman Goldberg after serving as an officer and trustee for 30 years has retired from the Board. Mel Levine, Esq. has also retired from the Board this year after serving 7 years.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:
For over 30 years we have managed to stabilize our fees in spite of the challenges posed by the economy. Unfortunately, with the increasing costs of labor, we now must adjust our price structure.
If you have been a member for at least two years of the Morristown Jewish Center-Beit Yisrael, Congregation B’nai Israel or Temple B’nai Or, you are entitled to save more than half the cost of a plot as a non-member.
Maintaining the overall appearance of the cemetery is a top priority and current projects include installing a new water line throughout the cemetery as well as resolving several water drainage concerns.
If you would like to serve on our Board, please contact me, Alise Ford or any of the current Board members for more information.
The annual Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, September 23rd at 12:30 pm. Parking is available along the driveway in the New Section and along Samuel Court (across the street from the New Section). Please do not park in the garden shop’s lot across from the cemetery.
Should you have any comments, concerns or questions, I can be reached via email at rja4606@yahoo.com or my cell phone at 973-538-4606.
Things you should know about the Cemetery:
The cemetery is open Sunday to Friday, dawn to dusk. There are no visitors on the Sabbath.
The colorful, painted stones in our birdbaths are the work of the children of Shalom Yeladim and Temple B’nai Or. They are there for visitors to place at the graves of loved ones. Please take only one or two stones and leave the rest for others.
We are always in need of volunteers to help distribute flags prior to Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
The cemetery is not responsible for materials left at gravesides; this includes baseballs, golf balls, seashells, windmills, stuffed dolls and flowers. Please remember that we share this site with many deer, groundhogs and a fox. Artificial flowers, glass containers and wreaths are not allowed.
If your loved one served in the military, please let us know so that we can honor his/her service with a flag. Flags are only permitted for those who served in the armed forces.
Should you need directions to the cemetery, you can find them at our website, www.bethisraelcemetery.com
The Beth Israel Cemetery Association is always looking for potential new Board members. Please contact Mr. Ron Axelrod if you have an interest in serving.

The fencing between the pillars has been repaired and our water system expanded to 7 locations throughout the property. Our next big project is to continue working on the fencing around our property and to continue to maintain our dignified appearance. My special thanks to our Board of Trustees for all their hard work and to Alise Ford, our Administrator for her continued support. President's Message
Another year has passed and the Beth Israel Cemetery has continued to upgrade and grow. Our water system is working and we are continuing to expand our cemetery grounds in the rear of the New Section. A new fence will be installed shortly.
Of course, we deeply feel the loss of our two Board members, Alan Brown and my father Gerald Axelrod. Their values and philosophy will be carried forward by the current Board.
Please remember that the planting of bushes around grave stones is NOT permitted according to our By-Laws.
If you have any questions or concerns about the cemetery, please feel free to call me at 973.538.4606

Our Trustees
The Board of Trustees of the Beth Israel Cemetery Association (BICA) has lost a long-term and dedicated member of our Board. Alan Brown was a decorated naval officer and a member of Temple B’nai Or. He served on the BICA Board since 1995 and for many years made sure that veterans in our cemetery received flags on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. He is sorely missed. This year also saw the passing of retired Trustee Gerald Axelrod who served on BICA’s Board from 1982 to 2005. During that time, he served as Chairman of the Grounds Committee insuring that our cemetery maintained its respectful and peaceful appearance. His son, Ron Axelrod, is the current BICA president and a member of the Morristown Jewish Center-Beit Yisrael. As head of the Review Committee, Ron makes sure that markers and monuments fit within cemetery by-law standards. William Roth, Vice-President, has been actively involved with the cemetery most of his life and helps obtain surveys for new fences and overseeing their construction as well as the overall maintenance of the cemetery. Fran Loewensteiner, Treasurer and member of MJC-Beit Yisrael continues to inspect markers and monuments to be sure each grave is marked. Bill Schlosser, Secretary, a member of Temple B’nai Or, contributes by carefully reviewing the finances. Past President Joel Beecher, Trustees Peter Loeb and Nancy Goldband are members of MJC-Beit Yisrael. Trustees Jill Katzman and Keith Barbarosh are members of Temple B’nai Or.

2019 NewsletterPardon Our Appearance
Pardon Our Appearance. This May and June have seen record rainfall here in northern New Jersey. Unfortunately, our cemetery is feeling the pain. Our soil is primarily clay – which means that water does not absorb easily or quickly. Rather, the water sits on the topsoil and pools. We have experienced unprecedented flooding that sometimes covers our graves and gravestones. And because the water does not drain, we cannot use a mower as the wheels will turn up the topsoil and dig up the grass. The result is that we have overgrown grass, flooded graves and it has become a major issue for the Association. We are in the process of seeking advice from a hydrologist as the best way to deal with this on-going problem. Please know that the grounds are not being neglected. The rain has impacted all the work at the cemetery – from pouring foundations to cutting trees to trimming hedges and spreading weed killer. This is an issue that we are working on and it may take a while until we come up with a solution that will satisfy our needs along with following the regulations of the State’s Wetlands legislation/regulations.
Please do not leave glass or plastic flowers at the cemetery.

condition of our cemetery. Please be assured that we, the Board, along with the Grounds Committee, are working diligently to try and keep up with the overwhelming task of making our cemetery a place for you to be proud to have chosen as the final resting place of your loved one.
